Farzaneh Hedayati

Arizona State University
Arizona, United States
Farzaneh Hedayati is a graduate student in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. She received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Allameh Tabataba'i University in Iran, and worked as an art therapist before immigration to the United States. For her master's project, she currently is developing a toolkit for creative imagination, combining expressive mandala drawing and different theories of creative imagination. Her connection to the topic of creativity is not limited to this project. She knows herself an outsider artist who uses creative self-expression to understand complexity of individuation process. In her personal life, she has also overcome many dangers and obstacles by the help of imagination. As an Iranian woman being raised in an isolated country where women's rights are suppressed, she made her own path using creative problem solving skills in different repressive situations. Using the power of imagination, she could stand against bigotry in the education system, and some societal values in Iran that confronted her nature. Now after living in the United States for three years, she strongly believes people need creativity to save their individuality – both in dictatorships and free countries.
