Paul Skaggs joined academia after 22 years in new product design and development – including 14 years in which he operated his own full-service consulting firm. Clients included Kodak, Fisher-Price, UPS, Motorola, AT&T, Xerox, Olivetti and Hewlett-Packard, among others. For the last 15 years, he has been a professor of industrial design at Brigham Young University, where he teaches structured creativity and facilitates a innovation boot camp. The boot camp has become one of the top-three favorite elective courses offered at BYU. Skaggs is the developer of the Ice Cream Cone Model of Innovation and the USERS model of design thinking principles and practices. His passion and research interest is in the area of design thinking, including the three cognitive modes of creative, visual and adaptive thinking. Skaggs has presented numerous papers on the subjects of creativity, innovation and design thinking and is the recipient of the Abell Innovation Professorship at Brigham Young University.
